23 Nov Make a Difference on World AIDS Day and Get Tested!

World AIDS Day on December 1 offers an opportunity to commemorate those we’ve lost to the HIV/AIDS epidemic while standing united in the mission to end the spread of HIV. This year, the World AIDS Day theme is, “The time to act is now,” and truly, we need you to act now.

The prevalence rate of HIV in the Coachella Valley is twice the national rate, and the CDC estimates that 1 in 8 people who are HIV-positive do not know their status. If we’re going to see the end of the HIV epidemic in our community, we all must do our part to update our HIV status and get tested.

On World AIDS Day, join Get Tested Coachella Valley at one of four community test sites throughout the community. We’ll be offering free and confidential HIV testing throughout the day so you can do your part to act now and help end the HIV epidemic:

  • The DOCK (1695 N. Sunrise Way, Palm Springs at Desert AIDS Project), 8AM – 5PM
  • Walgreens (78218 Varner Road, Palm Desert at the corner of Washington St.), 8AM – 12PM
  • Walgreens (80925 Highway 111, Indio at the corner of Madison St.), 2PM – 6PM
  • Salvation Army (30400 Landau Blvd., Cathedral City), 2PM – 6PM

Doing your part on World AIDS Day is quick and painless, too: our certified HIV test counselors use rapid oral swab HIV tests (no needles or blood!) and results come back in just 20 minutes. Check out this video of our Public Health Liaison Stephanie Cienfuegos demonstrating how simple it is to get an HIV test:

Additionally, Desert AIDS Project will be hosting a full day of events at our Palm Springs campus, kicking off with a rededication of the red “Ribbon of Hope” above the building’s main entrance off Sunrise Way. In the evening, the community is invited to join a celebration of this year’s Everyday Heroes, five everyday people doing extraordinary work to help end the HIV epidemic in the Coachella Valley and beyond.

On World AIDS Day and throughout the year, you can also help in the fight against HIV by talking to your friends, family and loved ones about the importance of getting tested for HIV. Share the Get Tested Coachella Valley Facebook page, show them this video about when someone should get tested for HIV, or offer support by going with your loved one to a local community test site for a free HIV test.

Remember, the time to act is now. How will YOU help end the HIV epidemic in honor of World AIDS Day?
